How to Apply: Step-by-Step PR Sponsorship Process

Can I sponsor my spouse for Singapore PR?
Yes. If you’re a Singapore Citizen or PR, you can sponsor your spouse for PR under the Family Ties scheme. You’ll need to show the marriage is genuine (marriage certificate, proof of cohabitation, and evidence of an ongoing relationship) and that you meet the income threshold to support a dependant.
The sponsor logs into the ICA e-Service with Singpass to start the application, and the spouse is added as the applicant. Spouse sponsorship is generally viewed favourably where the relationship and finances are clearly documented.
What is the minimum income to sponsor family members for PR?
There isn’t one fixed number published for every scenario, the required income scales with how many dependants you’re sponsoring and your existing financial obligations (housing loans, other debts). As a general guide, sponsors are expected to show stable, verifiable income via payslips, CPF statements, and tax records, sufficient to support each additional family member, with the threshold rising for two or more dependants.
If your income is close to the line, paying down existing debt or waiting for a documented pay rise before applying can meaningfully help your case.
How long does PR sponsorship take?
Sponsored applications go through the same ICA process as individual applications, so expect the same “within 6 months” benchmark for complete submissions, with more complex family cases, multiple children, documents from several countries, or background checks, taking longer.
Spouse-only sponsorship, with fewer people to verify, tends to move faster than applications covering a spouse plus several children.
What documents do sponsored dependents need to provide?
Expect to prepare: valid passport; birth certificate (for children) or marriage certificate (for spouse); a police clearance/character certificate from the home country; a recent passport photo; and clear proof of the relationship to the sponsor, cohabitation evidence and photos for spouses, school enrolment and birth certificates for children.
All foreign documents need certified translation into English. Any mismatch in names or unclear relationship documentation is a common trigger for ICA to request more information, so it’s worth resolving discrepancies before you submit.
Can parents apply for PR sponsorship?
No, this is a common point of confusion. Parents are not eligible for PR sponsorship, including parents of PRs. Aged parents of Singapore Citizens (not PRs) can apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) instead, which grants long-term (typically 5-year, renewable) residence but not permanent residency itself.
If you’re a PR wanting to eventually bring a parent over, the realistic path is usually: obtain citizenship yourself first, then sponsor your parent for LTVP.
