Who Can Apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass?
There are two main categories of applicants:
For Foreigners Sponsored by Singapore Citizens or PRs
Singapore Citizens and PRs can sponsor:
- Spouse (legally married)
- Common-law spouse (with supporting documents)
- Unmarried children under 21 years old (including legally adopted)
- Parents (Singapore Citizens only)
For Foreigners Sponsored by Work Pass Holders
Employment Pass or S Pass holders earning at least S$6,000/month may sponsor:

- Those earning S$12,000/month or more can also sponsor their common-law spouse, stepchildren, or parents (subject to approval)

Who is eligible for a Singapore Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP)?
LTVP is primarily for the immediate family of Singapore Citizens, most commonly aged parents, and in some cases grandparents or in-laws where the Citizen is the primary caregiver. Importantly, PRs generally cannot sponsor parents this way, only Citizens can. If you’re a PR hoping to bring a parent over long-term, the realistic path is usually to obtain citizenship first, then sponsor them for LTVP.
What is the minimum income requirement to sponsor an LTVP?
There’s no single universally fixed figure, required income scales with how many dependants you’re sponsoring and is assessed alongside your existing financial commitments, like housing or car loans. As a general guide, sponsors need to show stable, verifiable income, through payslips, CPF statements, and bank records, sufficient to comfortably support the dependant’s living and healthcare costs in Singapore, with the bar rising if you’re sponsoring more than one parent.
What documents do LTVP applicants need?
Typically: the applicant’s (parent’s) passport, birth certificate establishing the parent-child relationship, marriage certificate if relevant, a police clearance/character certificate from their home country, and a medical examination (including TB screening) from an ICA-approved doctor.
The Citizen sponsor needs to provide proof of employment/income, housing, and financial stability. All foreign documents require certified English translation.
How long does LTVP approval take?
LTVP applications are generally processed faster than PR or citizenship, commonly a matter of weeks rather than months assuming the application is complete and the medical examination and character certificate are already in hand.
The most common source of delay is waiting on a character certificate from the parent’s home country, so it’s worth starting that process early, ideally before submitting the ICA application.
How does LTVP compare to Dependent Pass or PR sponsorship for bringing over a parent?
These solve different problems. PR sponsorship doesn’t apply to parents at all except in rare cases. Dependent Pass is for spouses and children of work pass holders, not parents. LTVP is specifically the route for aged parents of Singapore Citizens, offering long-term (typically 5-year, renewable) residence without full PR status.
If your goal is simply to have a parent live with you long-term rather than gain them citizenship-equivalent rights, LTVP is usually the correct and only realistic route, provided you’re a Citizen (not just a PR).
