Why Choose Singapore? What Professionals and Founders Should Know Before Relocating

By Jason

Introduction

Hi, I'm Jason, an immigration specialist at Singapore Immigration Hub. Our team has spent close to a decade helping professionals, founders, and their families move to Singapore and put down roots here.

People rarely relocate for one reason. Professionals come for the careers and stay for the safety and schools. Founders come for the tax treatment and stay because the whole region is a short flight away. This article lays out what genuinely makes Singapore attractive, which pass gets you in the door, and how a relocation becomes permanent residence over time.

The Direct Answer

Singapore attracts professionals and founders with a rare combination: a 17 percent flat corporate tax rate with startup exemptions, a stable legal system with strong contract and IP protection, a location within a seven hour flight of most major Asian markets, and an immigration system with clear routes for employees (Employment Pass, S Pass), entrepreneurs (EntrePass), and investors (Global Investor Programme). For most relocating professionals the path runs: work pass first, then permanent residence after establishing a track record in Singapore.

Who this article is for

This article is for professionals weighing a move to Singapore and for founders deciding where to base a company in Asia.

It is especially useful if you are comparing Singapore against Hong Kong, Dubai, or staying put, and want the practical picture rather than the brochure.

What makes Singapore attractive?

Four advantages come up in almost every relocation conversation we have:

  • Tax. Corporate tax is a flat 17 percent, with the Start-up Tax Exemption reducing the effective rate further in a new company's first three years. There is no capital gains tax. Personal income tax is progressive and modest by Western standards.
  • Trust. English-language common law, enforceable contracts, strong intellectual property protection, and courts that rank among the most efficient anywhere. You can build a business on paper signed in Singapore.
  • Position. Southeast Asia's 600 million consumers are next door, and India and China are both within direct-flight reach. Regional headquarters sit here for a reason.
  • Liveability. Safety, healthcare, schools, and an expatriate community from everywhere. This matters more than founders expect, because relocations fail over family unhappiness more often than over business conditions.

Which pass do you need to move here?

Everyone's Singapore plan starts with the right pass. The main routes:

Work pass options at a glance

Pass Who it is for Key requirement
Employment Pass Professionals, managers, executives Minimum S$5,600 per month qualifying salary, higher with age and for financial services, plus the COMPASS points test. Rises to S$6,000 for new applications from 1 January 2027
S Pass Skilled workers Minimum S$3,300 per month at the youngest ages, rising with age, subject to quota and levy
EntrePass Founders of venture-backed or innovative startups A qualifying business plan, funding, or accreditation
Global Investor Programme Established business owners and family office principals Investment starting at S$10 million, direct route to PR

Salary figures are from the Ministry of Manpower's Employment Pass eligibility page and rise with age, so check your own bracket. Our work pass service handles eligibility checks and applications, and investors can read more on our Global Investor Programme page.

How do you incorporate a company in Singapore?

For founders, incorporation is fast and almost entirely online through ACRA, the corporate regulator, via BizFile+. The sequence:

  1. Engage a registered filing agent if you are a foreigner, since you cannot self-register from overseas.
  2. Reserve a unique company name and define your business activities.
  3. Appoint directors and shareholders. At least one director must be ordinarily resident in Singapore.
  4. Provide a local registered address.
  5. File the incorporation documents and open a corporate bank account.

A common founder mistake is treating incorporation and immigration as one step. Registering a company does not give you the right to live in Singapore and run it. You still need a pass, usually an EntrePass or an Employment Pass through your own company, and the pass application is assessed on its own merits. Our business relocation service manages both tracks together.

What compliance comes after setup?

Singapore is low-tax, not low-obligation. Once running, expect annual filings with ACRA, corporate income tax returns with IRAS, any licences your industry requires, and Employment Act obligations once you hire. None of it is heavy by international standards, but deadlines are enforced and directors are personally responsible for filings.

How does relocation become permanent residence?

For most people, PR is the second chapter, not the first. A typical timeline: arrive on a work pass, spend a year or more building employment history, tax records, and community ties, then apply for PR through the ICA e-Service. The application costs S$100 and takes up to 6 months to process. Founders and investors on the Global Investor Programme route apply for PR directly through their investment.

We wrote a complete walkthrough of that second chapter in our Singapore PR application guide.

Practical Takeaway

If you are planning a move:

  • Decide your route first: employee, founder, or investor. Everything else follows from the pass.
  • Check your Employment Pass salary bracket against MOM's current table, and note the January 2027 increase if you are planning ahead.
  • Founders: run incorporation and immigration as parallel tracks, not one step.
  • Budget for compliance from day one. Penalties cost more than bookkeeping.
  • Think in two chapters: settle on a pass now, build the PR case as you go.

Common Questions

Let Us Answer
All Your
Questions!

Is Singapore expensive to relocate to?

Housing and cars are expensive, most other things are not extreme by global-city standards, and low personal taxes offset much of the difference for professionals. For companies, the cost question usually resolves in Singapore’s favour once tax and market access are counted.

Can I move to Singapore without a job offer?

Generally you need a sponsor: an employer for an Employment Pass or S Pass, your own qualifying startup for an EntrePass, or a qualifying investment for the Global Investor Programme. There is no general points-based residence visa without one.

How long does a work pass application take?

Most Employment Pass applications are processed within 10 business days once submitted by the employer, longer for overseas companies without a Singapore entity. Plan the move around pass approval, not the other way round.

Do I pay Singapore tax on overseas income?

Singapore taxes on a territorial basis, and individuals are generally not taxed on foreign-sourced income, with specific exceptions. Get advice for your situation, especially if you have business interests in several countries.

How soon after arriving can I apply for PR?

There is no official minimum, but applications supported by at least six to twelve months of local employment and tax history do better in practice. The strongest position is a settled life that the paperwork can prove.
